BIOGRAPHY
Tongue in cheek rocker chick Jean Mazzei isn't making fun of herself or Flying Venus; no, she gets down on the ground, and gives rock and roll fans who are dying for lack of control performances, their fix. Her hooky melodies, sharp wit and quirky lyrics are relentless pop culture and perpetuate juvenile tendencies that fans rip at the seams to witness. "I love how you tell it like it is! It's as if you were inside my head!" says Dani Marcus, San Francisco resident and fan.
Having played a few dive bars on their hopscotch plan for a rock and roll fantasy life, Flying Venus has also had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Grammy winner Bonnie Hayes and the Superbonbons, Grammy nominated Carlos Guitarlos, and the SF icon The Gun and Doll Show. Mazzei produced Girlz Who Rock in 2003, a mini-festival showcasing local female fronted originals bands, and the sequel Girlz Who Roll, in 2004, which added female filmmakers to the spectacle. Flying Venus raucous live show, with the occasional pole dance, is like the B52s meeting in the Red Light District for ice cream.
THE MUSIC
Think B-52's meets the Mamas and the Papas. Add keyboards, dancing girls in fishnets with a Jim Morrison edge, and you've got the sound of Flying Venus. Just as the songs demonstrate an uncanny diversity, the members mirror that as age ranges, ethnic backgrounds, and sexual preferences are all represented. John Mazzei's smokin' keyboards hint of Herbie Hancock goes rock, B.C. Cliver screams on lead guitar with enough crunch to make even the Captain jealous. Xavier Guerrero can make his bass sing like Jaco Pastorius and hit like Green Day. Fred Harris goes wild on the drums with an intensity that will not let you sit still. Dori Petrie adds the sweet and sexy - sweet, blended backup vocals, combined with hard dancing. Top it off with Jean Mazzei's song writing, vocals that growl as much as they do soar, and an onstage presence similar to a cherry bomb. Throw it in a blender and you've got a chemical reaction that turns into FV's burlesque rock.
