Brass Night (Mar. 19, 2002) Review
by Alex Walsh
Brass Night was a heart-warming success. The night started off with trumpet player John Capobianco leading everyone through “Blues in F.” The rhythm section was hot — Brian Cooke on piano, John Hettel on bass, and Rob Gibson on drums. Brass players included Dave Martel on trombone, Tom Geller on trombone, and Marvin McFadden on trumpet. The audience was very appreciative and even included non-musicians.
After a few tunes, Dick Akright from Union Music and Best Instrument Repair gave a talk. Questions ranged from “How do you make a brass instrument?” to “What kind of mouthpiece did Miles Davis use?”
After a short break the music continued. Around 10 P.M. the rhythm section departed and the brass quintet sheet music was brought out — Bach and Handel. There were approximately nineteen participants in brass night, including the rhythm section.
Many thanks to members John Capobianco and Tom Geller for organizing this event. If you have an idea and some energy and would like to organize something similar (a Triangle Players Night?) please contact Alex Walsh at Local 6. (415) 575-0777.
