Local 6 Arranging Seminar — Pointers from a Pro

by Michael Slaughter

On April 16, member Rick Walsh gave a lively presentation on the techniques of arranging, including recorded examples of techniques used by first-rate arrangers.  He began with basic voicing techniques (such as “drop 2," lowering the second note of a close voicing an octave). He segued to quantifying dissonance. primary dissonance (“P.D.”), an interval of minor second, major seventh, and flat ninth, is the major contributor to dissonance in a chord. Following were explanations of how to approach writing a chart. (Tips: Do the hardest or kinkiest part first and start with important or “target” notes.)  Think of possibilities for development — expansion, diminution, accumulation, top note pedal, pedal point, concerted playing (“skyscraper chords”).

Mr. Walsh discussed the limitations of specific instruments, how to write for different combinations of instruments, voicings for strings, and voicing leading (use it only for smoothness). A brisk Q.-and-A. period provided answer to specific arranging questions and problems from the 13-person audience. All this came with comprehensive printed handouts presenting the concepts, examples, and including a bibliography and a tongue-in-cheek sheet listing 19 ways to ensure your arrangement will be a disaster. (Item No. 6 : “Have the brass change mutes in less than 6 seconds.”) Samples (PDF and MIDI files) of Rick Walsh’s arrangements are available at rickwalshmusic.com.
